Amalfi is the heart of the Amalfi Coast southeast of Naples. It is a charming, peaceful resort town on the scenic Amalfi Coast of Italy just 25km from the town of Salerno, a transportation and accommodation hub.
It is simple to hire a car for your stay - but driving in southern Italy is not for the faint-hearted! The Amalfi Coast roads are very narrow and cliff-hanging. For those who are truly adventurous, scooters can be a practical form of transport, however precision driving is essential. The Duomo di Sant' Andrea is an excellent examples of medieval architecture with Moorish influence include this ninth century cathedral. You can even see its magnificent bell tower from the harbour. The Cloister of Paradise, Chiostro del Paradiso next to the cathedral, is home to old mosaics and paintings, and 120 columns built in the Arabic style.
At the top of town is the Paper Museum highlighting the history of paper making. High quality handmade paper from Amalfi has been famous for centuries and is even used in the Vatican. Amatruda is the oldest paper manufacturer in Europe. Near the Paper Museum,is the Valley of the Mill. It is set along a stream bed between the cliffs. There are mills that brought water to the paper workshops and some are still in operation. Continuing beyond the town, walks in the steep wooded hills take in waterfalls, springs, and occasional sea views.
At your apartment rental or villa rental, there should be tourist maps to make sure you see all Amalfi has to offer.
After a day of sightseeing or relaxing at the beach, head back to your villa rental and savour Limoncello di Amalfi. This is a lemon liquor, one of Amalfi's top products and can be found in local stores.
Amalfi is also a good place for Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations but accommodations and vacation rentals might be hard to ensure without a booking during this festive season.
Besides history and beauty, the town is noted for its good beaches, historic accommodations traditional vacation rentals and true Italian villas. The beach can be crowded in summer, when Italians are on holiday and let their kids loose for the month on the pebbled beach. During this time you should book your Italian accommodation well in advance.
