Bolsena, a medieval town situated approximately 100 kilometres north of Rome, sits on the shores of Italy's largest lake, Lago Bolsena, in Viterbo Province in the north western corner of the Region of Lazio Roma . The lake is filled with remarkably clear, almost potable water and sits in the crater of an extinct volcano in close proximity to vacation home rental accommodations.

The surrounding landscape of apartment rental, condo rental and villa rental accommodation is rich in archaeological heritage with significant occupation evidence from the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Etruscan periods. Both Etruscans and Romans recognized the town's idyllic position which is sheltered by the Volsini Mountains and facing the north east shores of the lake to which Bolsena later lent its name. Today, water-sports enthusiasts from far and wide are attracted to vacation rental accommodations in Bolsena.

The town appears much like it did in medieval times, when Bolsena acquired immense religious importance thanks to the occurrence of the Eucharistic miracle. Legend has it that whilst a bohemian priest, somewhat skeptical about the host and wine being the true body and blood of Christ, was celebrating mass on the alter consecrated by the Martyr Saint Cristina, the wine indeed turned to blood. The site of the miracle, the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Santa Cristina, soon became the destination of pilgrimage and, in the 17th century, the Baroque Chapel of the Miracle was added.

The old city, and its eclectic vacation rentals, is surrounded by the remnants of tufa walls that were started by the Etruscans and completed by the Romans. A castle known as the Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara was built on a hill behind the town between the 12th and 14th centuries and still dominates the old medieval quarters of the town where you can lose yourself in the picturesque alleyways in walking distance from apartment rentals, condo rentals and villa rentals. The castle, easily accessible to vacation rental lodging and villas, is now home of the Museo Territoriale del Lago di Bolsena and offers spectacular views of the town and Lago Bolsena.

The town and surrounding area offer a wide variety of apartment rental, condo rental and villa rental accommodation boasting recreational activities, relaxation, history, culture and expansive views. There are a number of good, unpretentious and affordable restaurants and cafes near vacation rentals. Dishes made with fresh lake fish are recommended, particularly a fish soup called calle sbrosia which is made with water from the lake.

Vacation home rentals in Bolsena can be found in the old, medieval borough along a hill descending to the lake, and a newer area along the Bolsena Lake. Quintessential apartment rentals, condo rentals and villa rentals, nestled around the lake, through mountains and the hills, are covered with vineyards and the original Mediterranean forest of oak and chestnut trees. Bolsena is a cost effective holiday destination for families with children or romantic getaways where relaxation meets nature. Read More Read Less
