Armação de Pêra is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Silves. The name 'Armação' means tuna-fishing base. The village used to be called Pêra de Baixo or Lower Pêra to distinguish it from the present Pêra. The village is 21km (13.0 mi) southeast of Silves, 3km (1.9 mi) from Alcantarilha, 1.5 km (0.93 mi) from Pêra and 264 km (164 mi) south east of Lisbon. Every town close by has its own unique accommodations, vacation rentals, villa rentals, condo rentals and apartment rentals.
Not very long ago this town was nothing more than a collection of small shacks and local lodging. Nowadays, the town is mainly composed of blocks of holiday accommodation with the odd vacation rental, condo rental, apartment rental but not with many villa rental options. In the three summer months the town overflows with tourists but outside the top of the season it offers a wonderful peaceful holiday location with accommodation, villa rentals, vacation rentals and apartment rental widely available. Meanwhile, the nearby rural village of Pera remains as a reminder of the unspoiled typical sleepy Algarve. Boasting one of the finest longest sandy beaches in the Algarve this is a popular location for tourists. On the beach close to the eastern side of the town are a number of fish restaurants that pride themselves on serving fresh fish.
Like Albufeira, Armação de Pêra is one of the oldest established resorts in the Algarve. The beach is enormous and extends all the way down the coast to Galé. Besides the modern apartment rentals, accommodations, vacation rental and villa rentals the eastern part of town has retained all its original character, with a variety of brightly-painted fishing boats and plenty of high-quality fish restaurants.
The picturesque fishing town of Albufeira (approx 10km from Armacao) has become the tourist capital of the Algarve. Its golden beaches and pulsating night-life attract holidaymakers from all over Europe, with beach side lodging and ocean view villas. The small sandy coves around Albufeira are surrounded by high sandstone cliffs, providing shade in summer and protection against the wind in winter.
Around Armação de Pêra curves the most beautiful coastline in the Algarve. To the west, the sea has eaten into the soft, creamy limestone, carving it into fascinating shapes; arches and pinnacles rise sheer out of the translucent sea. The pretty beach of Nossa Senhora da Rocha has a tiny pilgrim chapel on the headland, where a popular religious festival takes place on 4 August each year. The parish church at the neighboring village of Alcantarilha houses a chapel decorated with human skulls and bones. Other places near to Armação de Pera are the market towns of Algoz, Alcantarilha, Porches and the inland historic and attractive city of Silves with its magnificent walls and castle.Read MoreRead Less
