Pahoa is in the Puna District , Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. It is located 30mi from Volcano via Keaau and only 13mi from Kalapana. There are many holiday lodging and accommodations available in the area, ranging from luxurious vacation rentals to charming condo rentals.

Pahoa Town is a western-style road village that seems to be stuck in time. With wood boardwalks and Victorian style decoration, this is truly a great place to hang out and to have some good food. The pride of “downtown” Pahoa is its raised wooden sidewalk, the false-front stores and the numerous old buildings, which give it a “Wild West” atmosphere. In fact, Pahoa has the highest concentration of old buildings in Hawaii. Some of these have been skilfully converted and now offer visitors wonderful historic accommodation, vacation rental and condo rental options.

There are a few small restaurants with a variety of cuisines, craft stores, galleries, boutiques and the island's oldest movie theatre. The Akebono Theatre is currently the oldest operating theatre in Hawaii. It was built around 1919 and is not just used for plays, dances and musicals, but also for classic film presentations.

The Pahoa Marketplace, which is located at the edge of town, has more shops and is a great to stock your accommodation or vacation rental with local delicacies. Pahoa also has schools, a church, supermarkets, police and fire departments, a large public swimming pool and a post office.

An attraction just outside of Pahoa is the Lava Tree State Park. This area was once a lush rainforest, but lava flows encased the trees and burned the wood inside. What remains are hollow stone skeletons that are covered with moss – an otherworldly rock forest.

Less than an hour away is the Akaka Falls State Park. It is located along the northeastern Hamakua Coast, you can see two gorgeous waterfalls on one short hike. The pleasant 0.4-mile uphill hike will take visitors through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns. As you follow the paved footpath, you'll first see 100-foot Kahuna Falls. Continue to follow the loop around the bend, and you'll discover the Falls plummeting 442-feet into a stream-eroded gorge. Beautiful Akaka Falls is perhaps the Big Island's most famous waterfall. Easily accessible, this hike takes less than an hour.
