Wailuku sits astride the foothills of the West Maui Mountains at the entrance to the Lao Valley. Wailuku is the seat of government on Maui since 1905. All main county, state, and federal offices are located here.

The Iao Valley offers great hiking, swimming and sightseeing in a lush tropical setting. It's hours are 7am to 7pm. Iao Valley State Monument provides an excellent view of Iao Needle, a single spire rising 1200 feet above the valley. The "Needle" has long been a place of pilgrimage for Hawaiians. Centuries ago, royalty was buried in the valley in secret graves.

In ancient times Wailuku was a favoured place for the inhabitants of Maui who maintained two Heiau (temples) on the hills above. It was easy to spot intruders and villages grew up around the temples.

Picturesque Kaahumanu congregational Church, named after Queen Kaakhumanu, is Maui's oldest church. With a lofty white spire it is the area's most dramatic man-made landmark.

Many of this Wailuku's old buildings have been preserved with their wooden facades intact. Wailuku has some of the best and most inexpensive restaurants in Maui.
