The town of
Acquapendente has many exciting landmarks. At the entrance gate of the town walls stands a medieval tower known as Julia de Jacopo. Opposite stands the Santo Sepolcro Cathedral consecrated in 1149. Another important site is the Church of St Francis. This once gothic-style church passed from the Benedictine order to the Conventuals in 1255. In the early 1500s a new belfry was designed and now contains three bells. The Clock Tower, a remaining structure of a Castle that belonged to the Emperor Barbarossa, stands over the upper part of the town. Acquapendente has a number of monuments of which the bridge over the River Paglia deserves special mention. Built in 1580 for Pope Gregory XIII and designed by the architect Fontana, the bridge was named after the Pope and became the Gregorian Bridge. In the towns main square stands a glorious marble monument to the memory of the anatomist Girolamo Fabrizio.
An important event called the Feast of Pugnaloni is celebrated in the Lazio region each year on the third Sunday of May. Its origins come from some time ago, when citizens revolted against the power of Federico I Barbarossa, and destroyed his castle. Many competitions are performed by the locals, and there is an awards ceremony at the end of the day in the towns main square.
