Campania is a region in Italy that is located south of Lazio. It marks the beginning of Southern Italy and is a popular region in this part of the country since it is easily accessible from Rome. Naples or Napoli is the capital of the Campania region. It is a significant historical city with its numerous old and enduring churches and other architectural structures. The Naples Cathedral or most widely known Cattedralle di San Gennaro is the main church of the city. Built as homage to Saint Januarius, the citys patron saint, the church is the seat of the Archbishop of Naples. The Church of Santa Chiara is another interesting building to visit. The Church of San Domenico Maggiore is located in the popular square named Spaccanapoli, Naples historic center. It is a favorite spot for tourists because it provides access to various significant sights of the city. At the center of this square is an obelisk with a statue of Saint Dominic atop. It is said to mark a plague in 1656. The Palazzo of Monte di Pieta is a historic building situated in Spaccanapoli street. Enjoy a blast from the past with its architecture, sculptures and frescoes. Castel Nuovo is a thirteenth century castle that offers another historical walk. And dont forget to visit the Naples National Archeological Museum. It houses a large collection of Roman and Greek artifacts and is known to be the most important Italian archeological museum. The building itself is a historical artifact, which was originally erected as a cavalry barrack in the 1750s. One of the highlights of the museum is their collection of classical sculptures such as The Farnese Hercules, The Farnese Atlas and the Farnese Bull, which is the largest of the recovered sculptures. There are also Roman bronze and mosaic collections. Even the citys shopping mall speaks of its history. Galleria Umberto is more than a hundred year old. Aside from its shops, restaurants and cafs, people go to this place to be amazed by its marbled floors, glass roofs and its impressive architecture. Another significant site to visit in Naples is Mount Vesuvius. Though it is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to its proximity to dense populations, it is a favorite tourist destination. The sight of it dominating the whole of Naples is overwhelming. The volcano became popular for its eruption that destroyed and buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The ruins of these cities are open for visitors too. Pompeii is one of Italys most popular tourist attractions. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Temple of Apollo is the citys most important religious structure. It is a temple dedicated to the Greek god Apollo. The Amphitheater of Pompeii is the oldest surviving of the Roman amphitheaters. The House of the Faun or Casa del Fauno was one of the most grand and most beautiful residence house in Pompeii and today, houses great works of art such as the Alexander Mosaic. Herculaneum is a smaller town but equally interesting. It was a wealthier town than Pompeii, evident by many fine houses excavated from its ruins. There are so many interesting things you can find in the rubbles of this buried town. Luxurious villas are found here such as the Villa of Papyri, the most famous of all. House of Neptune and Amphitrite are worth visiting with its stunning and lovely mosaics. A 25 minute ride on the circumvesuviana trains will take you to Herculaneum from Naples. Capri is a small Italian island 5 km from the mainland of Naples. It is known as the isle of the sirens in Greek mythology. The Blue Grotto or Grotta Azzurra is one of the many tourist spots here in Capri. It is a beautiful cave at the edge of the water with an opening that changes with the tides. It was used as a bath during Roman times. Inside the grotto, a spectacular view of the water, the rocks and the sun awaits. Villa Jovis is one of the many fascinating villas on Capri. It was the residence of the Roman Emperor Tiberius and is a treasure to be explored. Dont forget to visit the community in Anacapri. It is located atop a hill. Here, you can find the Villa San Michele, a 19th century mansion owned by Axel Munthe, a well-known personality in Capri. A ride in the Monte Solaro Chairlift allows you to see the breathtaking views of Mt. Solaro and the island itself. |
